Smartphone sensors and their use in mobiles | how they work?

Mobile sensors and their use in mobiles

We all want different kinds of sensors in our mobile phone to enhance our mobile's capabilities. Sensor makes your phone smart by enhancing its abilities. There are a lot of sensors we see in mobiles. You may not see all sensors in budget phones but most of the sensors you can see in your mobiles. Some of them are Pedometer, Magnetometer (or compass sensor) , Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, light sensor, bio-metric sensor, Gyroscope etc. These are the sensors which you can find in your smartphone. But do you know the uses of them? I hope all wants to know about them.

what are the smartphone sensors and their uses.

Sensors and their use:

Pedometer :    Basically you find this sensor in smart bands. Now you may find it in your smartphone also. This is sensor is really a good one for the health lover. It helps to count your foot steps and measure the distance you travel. This sensor is good who is conscious about their health.
Light sensor :    You may notice that their is a option "Auto Brightness" in notification panel of your phone. This actually works due to light sensor. You may notice if you put the brightness in auto mood it adjusts the brightness according to your need. When you are in outdoor condition it increases the brightness as more light falls on your display and when you are in indoor or in low light condition it decreases the brightness. This process is maintained by the Light sensor.

Proximity Sensor:  This is really a useful sensor which we notice in all of the smartphones. It is situated at the top of your phone's display beside the phone call speaker in most of the phones. You may notice that when you dial a number from your phone or receive a phone call and put the phone on your ear, the light of your phone's display turns off automatically. This happens due to the proximity sensor.
Now how it works? A beam of light comes from this sensor during a phone call and its range is too small. When you put the phone on your ear the beam of light gets a obstacle in form of your ear and it returns following the same path. When the beam of light returns the sensor turns off the display light.

Accelerometer sensor:This is a orientation sensor. When you open a game or video in video player, it automatically goes to landscape mode. This happens due to accelerometer sensor. You all see a option called " Auto rotate" in the notification panel. If you turn it on it automatically rotate your screen's orientation according to your position. Now this orientation is measured by this accelerometer sensor.During gaming and during watching videos it helps you. Even during browsing if you want to make your screen big you can turn on auto rotate. So this is a helpful sensor.

Gyroscope sensor : It is also a orientation sensor. But it is too much advanced and accurate in compare to accelerometer. It calculates your movement and orientation properly. It measures the angular velocity. But what is use of this sensor?
When you play racing game you have seen that if you move your phone right the car turns right and if you move your phone left the car turns left. So this is happen due to this gyroscope sensor. It measures proper orientation.

Magnetometer sensor : This is basically a compass. It gives you direction. You can access this by using some compass apps. If you are in unknown place and wants to know the direction then it will help you to give you the direction. It tells you which direction is east, west, north and south. It works on the principal of magnets. That is why it is called magnetometer.

Bio-metric sensor : Now I hope this is known to all. This is used to secure your phone by your bio-metric information. You may use fingerprint sensor, face unlock, iris scanner. These all are bio-metric sensors. It basically scans your fingers, or face or iris and makes your phone secure by bio-metric information.
These are some sensors which are used in smartphones. Here you come to how they work and what are their uses. Hope this will be a helpful information for all.
